Whether you love the sound of rain or hate being cooped up inside, you might be surprised to learn that rainfall can overflow and damage your septic system. Heavy storms can flood your drainfield and cause your septic system to back up, and can even lead to untreated sewage contaminating rivers and streams surrounding your property. Thankfully, there are measures you can take before, during, and after a storm to prevent long-term damage.

If your septic system has been damaged by recent storms, Quality Septic can help. Call or visit our website today for a free quote on your septic repairs or maintenance.

Preventative Measures

Before storm season hits your area, you should make sure your septic system is in good shape. Choose a time before storm season begins to have your system inspected and maintained so it can handle the burden of heavy rain. If your septic system hasn’t been properly maintained, it can sustain much more damage from heavy rainfall. Look for warning signs that your septic system needs to be cleaned out, and be sure to have your tank pumped every three to five years.

You can also prevent your drainfield from flooding by directing runoff water away from the field so less rainwater will soak into the soil. Only plant grass in the drainfield, since it has smaller roots that can aid in absorption without breaking up the soil. Lastly, avoid driving heavy equipment or vehicles over the drainfield, or else the soil will compact and it’ll be less capable of soaking up rainwater.

During the Storm

It’s important for septic system owners to keep an eye out for warning signs during storms. If you notice surface water pooling on your drainfield, drains working slower than usual, toilets taking more time to flush, or water backing up in your basement, these are signs that your drainfield is flooding and causing damage to your system.

If you notice these signs, try to conserve water until your system is restored. Don’t run your dishwasher, shower, or do laundry, and don’t flush the toilets unless absolutely necessary.

After the Storm

If the drainfield doesn’t restore itself after the storm, or if you suspect the rain has damaged your system, call a septic repair team right away. If you notice debris in your water, have your tank pumped as soon as possible but wait until the surface water in your drainfield has subsided. It’s a good idea to have your system inspected before and after storm season to make sure it’s in good condition and capable of handling future storms.
